Organisers were expecting Wool Week to be rammed this year, so decided to mark its eighth Wool Week with an extended programme of events and exhibitions, all over the UK. With 16 days to enjoy an exciting line-up of activities and initiatives all designed to educate, inspire and promote the virtues of wool, there is no reason why we can’t all find a way to celebrate this remarkable natural fibre.
As Scotland’s only Handcrafted Luxury Harris Tweed Furniture Company, celebrating the virtues of wool is never a chore, it’s simply another fantastic opportunity to not only shout about how proud we are to be a chink in the wool chain, but to talk about how this natural fibre is at the heart of everything we do at Blackhouse.
The unrivalled range of natural properties in sheep’s wool is the only reason we can honestly say that every piece of our furniture is handcrafted with luxury. Without the unique qualities and benefits of wool, our furniture wouldn’t be lovingly upholstered with a choice of over 17 Harris Tweed fabrics.
Wool is what makes Harris Tweed and Harris Tweed is what makes Blackhouse, so here are just some of the reasons why we love the wool which makes this famous cloth so special:
1. Natural and Renewable
Wool is a natural fibre. Sheep produce a new fleece annually, making wool a renewable fibre source.
Wool is much safer than most synthetics and cotton fabrics, as it has a naturally high UV protection. This means that fabrics made entirely from wool (like Harris Tweed) do not readily catch fire. Even if it were to catch light, wool does not release noxious fumes and burns very slowly.
As a natural and renewable material, wool is naturally biodegradable. Compared to other fabrics, wool will biodegrade in soil, releasing valuable nutrients.
Wool has a large capacity to absorb moisture making it extremely breathable. This enables wool-covered furnishings to absorb any moisture in the air, thus reducing humidity in the room and making for cleaner internal air.
A wool fibre can be bent 20,000 times without breaking and still have the power to return to its natural shape. The natural elasticity of wool enables it to resist flattening resulting in top quality wool products looking good, for longer.
6. Easy Care
Wool has a natural protective layer which prevents stains from being absorbed and deters dust. This means wool is naturally stain and static resistant. Using wool to upholster furniture is practical and easy to maintain.
Wool is active and reacts to temperature which means it is cosy and warm in cold weather and cool in hotter weather (not that we get much of that in Scotland!)
As our support and admiration for the Campaign for Wool grows, so does the love and passion we have for seeing our handcrafted luxury Harris Tweed furniture being enjoyed as part of everyday modern luxury living.
With every true love story their has to be a movie – enjoy!
